The job of the ACLU is to defend the rule of law and the constitution. Defending the rights of those you disagree with is the most noble expression of belief in our country that I can imagine.
But, you know. The constitution is only about protecting MY freedoms.
I tend to have more sympathy for those who disagree in a civil manner rather than those who express their disagreement by killing people. Once someone crosses that line I think we should, as Ron White puts it, "kill them back."
I think we're having two different conversations. I was under the impression that we were discussing if the ACLU was in the wrong to file this lawsuit. The purpose of the suit is to determine, in a court of law, whether rights were violated.
You can't just say 'well, I don't like what they did, so they don't get the same protections'. Civil rights don't work like that. Summary executions/assassination strips an individual of due process. The fact is, until an individual is tried and convicted of a crime they cannot be punished.
Or, so goes the argument.
