Anyone else get in on this?

I got a code for beta opt in in PC Gamer and I entered into the website in everything.  Supposedly when they start the beta I'll get in but I haven't heard anything about it since then.

Odd. I got my invite yesterday afternoon,  got the client downloaded last night. I'd check around for any download links.

So I do have a few complaints about Planetside 2. Yes, I know it is in beta. And the devs came on last night saying they're going to address some performance issues. But...

My machine is capable of producing at least 60 fps in several games. It's a pretty decent rig. I have an AMD x6 1090T 3.2Ghz, 8 GB of DDR 3 and an NVIDIA GTX 470 sitting on an asus Formula IV motherboard.

I was getting consistent framerate issues where apparently there were at least 200 players in the area. The framerate would not change no matter where I looked, which told me that the engine was drawing everything, no matter where I was looking. If I got into a zone where there were just a few players, I could pull out 60 fps no issue.

Adjusting resolution and quality didn't help, and it really, really detracted from the gameplay that they're setting expectations for. I am in sincere hopes that the performance issues are fixed here, because if they are... it's gonna be a hell of a game.

If there's one thing that Sony Online Entertainment excels at, it's taking a game with amazing, ground-breaking concepts and then fucking it up completely.

There was a minor update to the code last night before I went back in to play, and it appeared to have helped. I was having smooth framerates throughout, though I was not sure if I was in the same-scale battle before. I had a lot more fun though; I may try to FRAPS some gameplay and let you guys see it.

Yeah so I've got it installed and everything but the servers are all locked.  Dunno what that's all about, I'm guessing I could probably find out on their forums, but that would take more effort than I can muster.

There's a twitter feed for it. They took the servers down at about 9a server time to work on an issue. It should be back up tomorrow.

Well, I'll update what has been happening so far.

Firstly, they've done the whole "buy access to the beta" thing, and I believe they have done that because the beta is fairly stable now. I have no framerate issues, like I was having before. There are still some bugs, but the only  two that I find immediately annoying are as follows:

1) Whenever you're using the interface (M for map, which has tabs to switch between different interfaces), there is a chance your mouse will simply disappear, which means you have to close the interface and reopen it and move quickly, as your mouse is likely to disappear again.

2) There appears to be an issue with USB headset microphones when they're not the same source for sound. They tend to break up in the ears of others, and there is a chance at that point that they'll recover or you'll go out altogether, requiring a client restart.

But beyond that, the game has become very enjoyable. I am toying with the different factions, and the different "speccing" that you can get into is the result of certification points which are earned in battle, and spent in the interface. They are not all specific to a class, however. For example, a cert may go towards equipment for a gun (the thermal sights, for one) and that gun may be used across a few different classes.

These cert points can be spent on vehicle customizations too, such as what cannons are mounted on your Liberator (a three-man bomber/gunship), different armor plating for your Sunderer (an APC), or for different styles of headlights. A lot of the cert options are not available for testing yet, though.

Voice is very useful in the game, even if you're listening. For now, a lot of the CoD mic spammers are not existent outside of the warpgates, and you have toggles to broadcast between proximity, squad, platoon and your outfit, which is more or less a guild.

It's becoming very pretty. I look forward to seeing what happens before its release, which is slated for New Year's Eve.

I'm keen for it, but not about to buy "Alpha squad."

I don't think there are any Aussie servers anyhow. I have encountered several Australians on the west servers.

Yeah, I'm fair sure there aren't, and I doubt there will be.

Even when there are Aussie servers they're usually not based here anyway.  I think Ultima Online was the last MMO that actually had one.

On the plus side, I don't see them lagging when they're in my squad. If my brother doesn't use the key I got, I'll send it your way.

My dear friends, The Enclave, were featured in a Total Biscuit stream of PS2.  The video is located on their home page, which should give you a taste of the game:
